The design of the Royal Albert Hall went through several iterations prior to its completion. Originally Henry Cole proposed a massive music hall 'constructed with due regard to the principles of sound' to hold 30,000 people. Inside people could 'assemble and practise chorus singing', providing 'a new and beneficial attraction especially to thousands of artisans who now seek their evening amusements in debasing pursuits and temptations'.
