The First World War had a severe impact on the food supply in occupied Belgium. The prospect of famine turned food into an urgent political problem and the subject a massive domestic and foreign relief operation.
To support this operation the Hall hosted a benefit concert featuring speeches by British Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith, songs by Clara Butt and selections by King Albert's Band.
