American bass-baritone concert artist and stage and film actor Paul Robeson who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political activism appeared at the Hall on numerous occasions. Most famously he flew in to deliver a speech against fascism during a benefit concert in aid of the Spanish Republic in 1937 to rapturous applause.
